Darnell Kirkwood Visits Lynn and Shares Advice

On Oct. 14, 2022, Darnell Kirkwood and his wife, Danielle, visited Lynn University, shared their story and gave advice on self-marketing in the arts and entertainment industries.
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Kirkwood is an alumnus of Lynn University.
Though most of his classes were offered by the College of Business and Management, his passions led him to spend most of his time at the College of Communication and Design. While at Lynn, he was also a member of the men’s basketball team.
After graduation, Kirkwood went to Denmark to play basketball, but two years later, an injury ended his basketball career. He returned to South Florida and began modeling.
While building his career in modeling, he also became an actor. Darnell Kirkwood has been in several productions, including Magic City, The Young and the Restless and Top Gun: Maverick.
“I believe marketing starts with yourself. You must spend much time to yourself and build your story,” said Kirkwood.
In addition to being an accomplished model and actor, he is also an up-and-coming artist who is passionate about telling stories — something he does with his art. Kirkwood wants his energy to be felt, and he aims to be a rebel in the industry.

His wife stirs things up as well. Danielle Kirkwood got her start as a makeup artist, but she now focuses on styling and selling her jewelry collection.
She has worked with several celebrities and professionals in the fashion industry. She highlighted that the key to getting opportunities is being genuine.
“Education is a useful tool in life, but it is not everything,” said Kirkwood. “Being a genuine person is what is most important.”
Darnel emphasized the importance of genuineness, saying he believes a person’s greatest superpower is themselves, saying that “You create undeniable products when you are your truest self.”
Both Darnell and Danielle encouraged people to seek opportunities but warned them not to think only of themselves. “Find out what you can add before asking what others can do for you. Let each relationship be mutually beneficial,” said Darnell.
The arts and entertainment industries have their challenges, but anyone can make it with determination and the right attitude. Darnell and Danielle continue to set an example and they encourage people and students to be genuine, passionate and to get out of their comfort zones.
